Description

Cleopatra and Frankenstein is an astounding and painfully relatable debut novel about the spontaneous decisions that shape our entire lives and those imperfect relationships born of unexpectedly perfect evenings. It reached out, ripped my heart out through my chest, threw it at the wall and left me staring into a huge abyss for twenty straight minutes. I think Coco Mellors created characters that are more likeable, with added depth and more interesting stories and plot lines that kept me so much more engaged throughout the story. For readers of Modern Lovers and Conversations with Friends, an addictive, humorous, and poignant debut novel about the shock waves caused by one couple’s impulsive marriage.

So if a book can grip me where I'm reading the words and actually taking them in rather than having my eyes read the words while my brain thinks of that one time in year seven when a boy I liked said happy birthday to me and I awkwardly said happy birthday back. Let me give you some context of how I came about the novel: to start with, I think I was more accustomed with the cover of this novel, than I was the actual content of it. I became both tired of it and I also desperately wanted to go back to its pages, its got the push and pull of a toxic relationship, a clever tool used to mimic the central relationship in the novel. The last thing I'll say is that lately I have been holding a pen in my hand while I read, but I'm rarely prompted to use it.But you’ll notice from her acknowledgements that this was a labour of love, and one you could say, was worth every second. For readers of Modern Lovers and Conversations with Friends, an addictive, humorous, and poignant debut novel about the shock waves caused by one couple's impulsive marriage.

Cleopatra and Frankenstein is an astounding and painfully relatable debut novel about the spontaneous decisions that shape our entire lives and those imperfect relationships born of unexpectedly perfect evenings. Their romance story isn't based on love at first sight and their marriage isn't created from some cringe high-school love.Other than that I don't have much else to say about this one aside from that I read this in a day because I couldn't put it down and quite liked it! I overall highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something that will make your heart warm and shattered at the same time. She offers him a life imbued with beauty and art-and, hopefully, a reason to cut back on his drinking. She talks about being broke, drugs, alcohol abuse, childhood trauma, suicide, loss of friendship, mental health and multiple LGBTQ+ topics. i don't mind self-important nor self-indulgent novels but they need to actually bring something to the 'literary' table.
