About this deal

This series definitely had a lot of amusing and anarchic moments, it was good seeing lots of guest stars joining in, and I enjoyed it a lot. Marmalade was an extrememly naughty and mischevious girl - rather like a female Dennis the Menace in many ways. I *think* the show was fairly faithful to the books but we're pre-dating my house having a VCR so this is all based on my memory of my memory - it's second-hand even to myself. One of my favourite episodes in this series was a parody of Fame, set at the New York School For Show-Offs And Big Heads, which featured some song and dance routines, and among the cast was Danny John-Jules (about five years before Red Dwarf), and future Blue Peter presenter Michael Sundin. A memorial was held at the Mill Hill Buddhist Centre in north London later that month and attended by family and close friends.

Every episode starts with a terribly earnest "bad girl warning" telling viewers to switch off if they didn’t like bad girls doing bad things – all that reverse psychology stuff. Marmalade first appeared in the book Marmalade and Rufus in 1979, and the character was later brought to television in 1981 in which she was played by the actress Charlotte Coleman. Educating Marmalade was one of my favourite children's programmes that aired back in 1981 - I remember getting a Marmalade Atkins Annual.

One of the books was 'Marmalade Atkins in Space', which had a cover photo of her in a spaceship cabin with a couple of astronauts. They include ‘Cringe Hill’, the worst school in England, full of anarchic punks and crooks (including a brief cameo from a young Kathy Bates, typecast from the off as a Waynetta Slob type) through to schools run by nuns, and everything in-between. All articles are copyright © Television Heaven or their individual authors where stated and may not be reproduced without permission. Marmalade Atkins, the worst-behaved girl in the world, had a punk-style makeover for television and became a wild-haired, bubblegum-blowing, machine-gun toting Cockney brat. We will publish your review of Educating Marmalade - The Complete Series on DVD within a few days as long as it meets our guidelines. The series spawned a brace of spin-offs, including Marmalade Atkins in Space (in which her parents, at their wit's end, bundled the girl into a rocket ship bound for the far reaches of the universe! At 15, feeling that her upbringing had been too liberal, since her parents "didn't believe in restraint", Coleman enrolled at Dartington Hall School in Devon. Marmalade Atkins is a rough and tumble tomboy whose only friend is a nodding dog (popular in the back of cars at the time) who also talks to her.The two series have been released by Network as single disc sets containing all episodes from each series respectively. Educating Marmalade' also starred the wonderful Charlotte Coleman from 'Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit', 'Four Weddings and a Funeral', and the much underrated (did anybody else see it? I know Charlotte Coleman was the star (later in Four Weddings and a Funeral and the sitcom, How Do You Want Me?
