Years ago, American and French oak wine barrels are common place, California, dried herbs and a hint of caramel. Batch 77 opens with complex notes of raspberry, stewed cherry and cassis, layered over a thread of smoked meat and tobacco. This Zinfandel is a classic example of the variety’s lush character, which, emphasized by time in our signature bourbon barrels, finishes with. Classic Zinfandel flavors of ripe cherry and dark bramble fruit are balanced by charred bourbon barrel accents of toffee, nutmeg and vanilla for a deep, rich finish.

For the last winemaking step, the wine was matured in used bourbon barrels–some as many as 13 years old–from a selection of America’s most. History - Years ago, when I was just starting out as a winemaker, it was almost unheard of to get French oak wine barrels and American oak barrels, were for whisky, not wine. The addition of fruit from Shenandoah Valley (3%) contributes big ripe plum and white pepper flavors to the wine’s tapestry. With its present fruit acidity, the 1000 Stories Zinfandel presents itself wonderfully fresh and lively on the palate. Today American and French oak wine barrels are commonplace, so the inspiration for 1000 Stories is a nod to the way things were.It’s made by Fetzer winery and produced in smaller batches, “like fine Bourbon,” from Fetzer’s site – around 5000 cases. Lots' of oak at first, only after will you pick up the caramel, after that 2 hour period it will develop, the taste really shines, still heavy but smoother, benefits from letting this breathe a good while. I love stinky cheese, my Nespresso machine, Loire Valley white wines, bold full-bodied reds, and championing ladies in winemaking.

Individual lots for this intriguing wine began the ageing process in traditional American and French oak barrels before being introduced to new Bourbon barrels.There’s boysenberry and cherry mixed with rich spice notes, some charred oak, smoke, vanilla, caramel, mace, nutmeg, and an herbal thyme note. We finished a portion of the wine in older bourbon barrels—with a touch of more heavily charred first-fill barrels—lending a smoky character to the finish.
