About this deal

Given the intended audience, Haunters of the Deep is less enigmatic and less “open” than Enys Men, resolving itself quite neatly. Cover Notes: A wildlife volunteer's daily observations of a rare flower take a dark turn into the strange and metaphysical, forcing both her and viewers to question what is real and what is nightmare. On an island off the Cornish coast, a woman (Mary Woodvine), not named and listed in the credits as The Volunteer, is alone, there to monitor some unusual flowers growing there. Everything feels heightened, and very much like there is a psychological field in and around the island adding to the tension. Bonus features include a commentary by Jenkin and critic Mark Kermode; an interview with the director and his lead Mary Woodvine, hosted by Kermode; a lengthy discussion on film sound between Jenkin and Berberian Sound Studio's Peter Strickland; the director's audio diaries; "Haunters of the Deep" (61 minutes), a Children's Film Foundation classic that was clearly an influence on Jenkin's work; and a Cornish travelogue short from the BFI archives.

Pace is measured, even for a not-especially-long film as this, and to my mind after two viewings it is over-extended.Online since 2010 it is one of the fastest-growing and most respected music-related publications on the net. The latter shot his scenes at the end of principal photography – partly because they had to wait for him to receive his second Covid vaccination – and his presence made the crew less demob-happy than they might have been.

The BFI have released several Children’s Film Foundation short features, and short shorts as well, on DVD, including so far four Bumper Box sets ( volumes 3 and 4 reviewed by me for this site). A self-navigating gallery of nine production stills, including some of Jenkin with his camera, and ten film stills. Enys Men is an open text which doesn’t explain itself and allows you to form your own interpretations of it, which may be entrancing or infuriating according to taste and sensibility. Mary Woodvine’s memories of the shoot sometimes conflict with Jenkin’s, such as the scene where she is singing along via one word to the radio. Extras on this BFI dual-format release include a Children’s Film Foundation film, Haunters of the Deep (1984), sharing West Cornwall locations and a haunted tin mine with Enys Men, and The Duchy of Cornwall (1938), a travel short evoking the county’s Mediterranean forebears, storm-lashed iron coast, wrestling rituals, tin mines and tourists. The Pipers had also been set in stone, a distance away from the circle, for their part in the heathen ritual. We will introduce you exclusively to Newpay finance products provided by NewDay Limited under this Introducer Appointed Representative arrangement. At night she reads Teddy Goldsmith and Robert Allen’s A Blueprint for Survival (1972), an early eco-warning placing us in the apocalyptic terrain of TV’s Survivors (1975-77), Doom Watch (1970-72) and the Dr Who serial The Green Death (1973). There, a single volunteer ( Mary Woodvine) recording data on an unfamiliar flower finds her lonely daily observations turning troublingly towards the strange and metaphysical, forcing her to question what is real and what is nightmare.

Filmed on location around the disused tin mines of West Penwith, it is also an enigmatic ode to Cornwall's rich traditions of folklore and the region's rugged natural beauty.

For much of the film, the soundstage is mostly in the front speakers, with surrounds used for ambience, but occasionally there is more use of those surrounds, for example a helicopter near the end of the film. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. The eerie ethno-mysticism of Jenkin influences The Shout (1978), The Last Wave (1977) and Walkabout (1971) also lie in Enys Men’s unquiet soil, where the films’ Aboriginal earth-magic becomes Cornish.

The two pipers who had led the girls astray were also petrified, a little further away But what, young Jenkin asked himself, what if the stones were actually alive? Along with that, there’s Mary Woodvine as the volunteer, who spends most of the time using her body language, and she’s fantastic. They have been edited together for this release – you can tell the joins from changes in ambience – and play as an optional audio track on the main feature. Before the song has finished, I suspect that it won’t be long before I’ll want to see Enys Men again too. The LP comes housed in a spined sleeve printed on beautiful reverse board, with double sided printed insert and download card. Its Cornish themes are sunk just as deep, in a tin mine whose miners rise up and lifeboatmen dashed on rocks, violent history also infecting the volunteer’s scar.
