I first picked up this book because my Mum had been sent it and was about to start reading it and the cover intrigued me. It honestly left my jaw on the floor and my heart a little bit broken by the way the truth was forced to come out.

The Hunter's Lodge train fighter and people who honour their sacred pledge to serving all seven clans equally, to protect the people of said clans from the darkness and tyranny of the wild (mostly magical creatures that are rising again after the dark war - as always humans are the most terrifying of the creatures). Any Middle Grade fantasy always has to contend with comparisons to Harry Potter and, although very different stories (and with very different protagonists), Fireborn does have that compulsive ‘one more page, one more chapter, one more book’ quality that held me in its grip and had me fully immersed in the adventures of Twelve and her friends – and in the world of Ember more widely. This takes her on an adventure of friendship, family, self-realization, danger and most importantly self-love! Twelve who seems to have finally found a 'friend' in Seven decides to go after the Goblins and get her friend back.The world building is solid, and we see the environment as the gang travel through it, although the story does centre on the monsters at times and there were some questions that I wanted answering. There is so much to love: a protagonist who is strong and determined, side characters who are along for the ride are also awesome, and a constantly-moving plot. I like how she handles adversity and that she never gives up, and I enjoyed her journey throughout the story.

Set in the world of Ember children from various clans end up living at the hunting lodge and training to become hunters to protect every clan from the monsters that threaten the world. They're all richly developed and interesting characters, and I thought they all worked together well.Teaming up with Dog, the Stone Guardian of the Lodge, Twelve ends up on an epic adventure that will change her life, her name - and her entire world. From the first pages it was easy and compelling to read although I have to admit to not really liking Twelve’s character so much at the start.

Fireborn is a middle-grade book set in a fictional prehistorical world where different clans are protected by the Hunting Lodge a place where hunters live and train. A children's fantasy filled with everything you could possibly want in a middle grade I honestly can't tell you how excited I am that this is a series. The themes do swing to the darker side of middle grade, with some intense scenes, but I cannot wait to see where this goes. At the start of the book she's experienced the worst moments anyone could ever imagine, and it's made her hard and full of rage. At turns exciting, funny and heart wrenchingly sad, it marks the introduction of an unstoppable new voice in children’s storytelling.
