About this deal

The narrative is strong and keeps me connected throughout, with mid-length chapters to leave me demanding more. If you're a fan of police procedurals or Nordic crime thrillers and haven't discovered this series yet, I implore you to check it out!

Yet it never ever came close to losing me as a reader and actually pushed me forward wanting to know those answers and as I said everything is delivered in a very convincing way. Die Idee dahinter hätte wirklich interessant sein können, aber bei der Umsetzung hat es meiner Ansicht nach gehapert. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The major plot of the novel follows Pamela and Martin as they try to work through Martin’s mental blocks and PTSD to unlock his memories of the night, while also trying to rebuild their lives and potentially adopt a teenage girl before she ages out of the foster system.

Zwar sind für das Verständnis des Falls keine großen Vorkenntnisse nötig, komplette Neueinsteiger dürften an vielen Punkten aber einige kleine bis mittelgroße Fragezeichen vor den Augen haben. Definitely one of the most addictive novels I've read in my 2022 advanced reading- I'm a fan of Lars Kepler anyway and I think this might be my favourite yet. Without spoiling too much, the reveal of his identity is actually boring, while the explanation of how he came to be and his motivations are really good. Here, this husband and wife writing team tackle a frightening scenario so dreadfully evil that it is sobering to realize it is a scenario that has played out in reality.

Which brings me to another aspect I find troubling, that is the depiction of mental health and its treatment, another area where it's probably true to say we are now more aware of sensitivities around turning mental health issues into fodder for crime novels. If his hunch is correct, she’s one of the few people who stands a chance at bringing this criminal mastermind down. I was gripped more by the first two chapters of this book than the entirety of the last three books i have. It is a stand alone and there is some good background info but I would have liked to have started at the beginning. Like all the previous Killer Instinct novels, Joona Linna is back as the main character, although Kepler continues the trend of writing from multiple character points-of-view; some for a single chapter, others are major characters throughout the story. You can see that there is a dangerous killer operating here, and it is not yet clear what their motive is.
