Biographies of designers and factories give the background information you need to help date and value objects, while special 'Judith Picks' sections give fascinating background and valuation details for particularly interesting or unusual objects. Judith went to the local comprehensive, Galashiels Academy, then read English at Edinburgh University, where she started to collect old plates and saucers with exotic Chinoiserie themes for a few pence apiece to cheer up her student room. Their new publishing company was run from the outbuildings, while the family lived in a smaller house at Sissinghurst and a Gothic mansion in Kensington.
Over the years those who are keen to get rid of their clutter could literally be counting the costs having potentially thrown away a fortune disposing of memorabilia they perhaps thought wasn’t worth keeping. He was then affecting long hair and a moustache, and looked, as one critic put it, like “a black Pekinese had been dropped on his head from a great height”.
After staying on at Edinburgh to do a master’s in History, Judith was hired in 1974 as an assistant – at twice the going rate – by Martin Miller, who was living in a period of semi-retirement in a Victorian Gothic castle outside Galashiels.
