About this deal

While I’m sure games such as Sleeping Gods or Tainted Grail are masterpieces, it was Lands of Galzyr that ignited my interest in an open-world board game. It promised a casual, family-friendly environment, and an evolving world, that is both easy to enter and exit. Theme and Setting I can see how some players may find this a little odd and unless your really engrossed in the world here, might not enjoy it as much as others. Final Thoughts Lands of Galzyr is a very fun, story-rich, and accessible open-world board game. You’ll fall in love with the characters and the world immediately. The quests are diverse and immersive.

While you’re waiting for these quests to filter through, there are also day and month mechanics. Where it’s a new month each time you play, and a new day of the week each round of play. Although I don’t know if this affects anything within the storybook app. It does add a sense of time and seasons passing between rounds, and between games. These passages of narrative are an absolute joy to read and are a driving factor for me wanting to stop this review right now, and go play it again. Let’s talk about the characters in the game – who can we start as, and how do their stats work? We’ve got lovely coloured pegs to show our attributes and progress Playing Lands of Galzyr couldn’t be simpler, move your character a couple of spaces and then read through several paragraphs of text as your character goes on an adventure. During this text, you’ll come across moments where you’ll have to put die-rolling skills to the test. Embark on a quest of discovery and glory as you explore the world of Galzyr. Choose your character, receive your starting items/traits and dive into a huge world, full of possibilities and rewards.Someone on Board Game Geek once asked author Sami Laakso if they would consider designing a more “mature” iteration of Daimyria, the realm in which Lands of Galzyr takes place. In many ways, Laakso’s response beautifully sums up my own thoughts and impressions regarding Lands of Galzyr.

And now, we have the outcome of putting so many games in the same universe – Lands of Galzyr is an adventure game with a persistent world and so many stories to tell. From a mid-sized box of fairly unassuming pieces comes a game of rich storytelling that happily goes toe to toe with games like Descent and Gloomhaven, but with a focus on story over combat. With an web driven choose-your-own-path adventure which takes you through the story, provides choices, and triggers your tests based on your stats and the keywords your and your companions have to hand. For instance you could become skilled at negotiation and stealth, become tranquil and enlightened or even become a respected hero. All these abilities and changes help you grow attached to your character and give them much more personality. Heavy Lifting The game uses time and seasons as a key factor determining how your adventure is going to go, and companions might only stay with you for a handful of days, making your time together importantly shaped by their presence. This urgency of characters makes your choices meaningful, and the world feel more alive. No character feels like an item, and everything you do has an impact on the world beyond its immediate effect. This transports you into the world of Galzyr, with hundreds of stories and adventures to be discovered. You might meet unusual characters, save a town, avoid mercenaries, travel to ancient temples and more. The possibilities are almost endless. Daimyria is world that’s been expanding for a while now. Starting out as the cute-but-cutthroat setting for Dale of Merchants and its standalone expansion-slash-sequels that include classic motivations like being the best at running a train station, it then became the spiritual home of not-a-wargame Dawn of Peacemakers. This interesting inversion of the usual wargame concept of smashing your opponent’s miniatures up sees players cooperatively attempting to broker a ceasefire between Macaws and Ocelots. Here, players are attempting to take the blood out of the fight on both sides at the same time, making for an interesting puzzle of peace.Open game world: You decide the direction of your adventure. There’s lots to see wherever you choose to go. When you’re done with moving, you will resolve the scene on your final location for that turn. Normally, these will be quest related, as each quest requires you to be in a specific location to progress. The tests that you’re required to pass vary in difficulty (how many icons on dice you need to succeed) and flavor. I've been writing and playing games my entire life. I love cyberpunk, cute animals, spaceships, and spaceships piloted by cute cyberpunk animals. Aro Laaksonen Story writing
