About this deal

Professor Susan Lanham-New, Head of Nutrition Sciences at Surrey University, has been investigating how good these milks are for us. She says the most important thing, when switching to a plant-based milk, is to make sure it’s fortified with the right vitamins and minerals.

Launched across Nestlé’s French, Dutch and Portuguese markets in May, Wunda is pitched as“the closest thing to milk” byNestléandwill go on sale in Tesco and Co-op initially, from 28 June. Another issue is that Californian almond farmers often use a lot of pesticides, which can be harmful to the health of wildlife and people. It has been a particular cause of concern for bee welfare. The use of bees to pollinate California’s almond monocrops is also thought by some to be putting bees under a lot of stress. The Co-op is the latest British supermarket to introduce an own-brand plant-based milk. As part of its fifty-strong vegan range GRO, the Co-op has released The Oaty One. It’s the cheapest barista oat milk in the UK, at a retail price of 79p for 1 litre. The brand says this is 58% cheaper than the “leading branded oat milk”. Alpro sells a fantastic range of plant-based milks, coconut, almond and cashew to name a few, but this is my least favourite. They talk about increasing certification, or supporting European soya (Aldi), stating or implying they currently source from South America. Nadine Maggi, MD of Hain Celestial which owns the brand said “We recognise the need for versatility and variety, and we feel confident that our new range of plant-based drinks offers something for everyone’s usage needs.”

As it is Veganuary this month, I taste-tested a whopping nine different plant-based milks to find the best one for my brew. Most brands in the top half of the table received a Company Ethos mark for being from entirely vegan companies:This is the first time we have used our new carbon management and reporting rating in the plant milk guide. So, what’s the impact on our health? “In countries which have more ultra-processed foods, there is an increase in obesity and other diet related illnesses,” says Giles. The following companies received our best rating for carbon management and reporting: Oatly, Sharpham Park, Oato, Plamil and The Organic Plantmilk Company (ReRooted).

The range comprises Barista StyleSKUs in oat and coconut variants, as well as Organic Soya and Organic Rice We want to offer a drink that tastes great and makes using a plant-based milk alternative a tasty, positive, no-compromise experience that is good for you and good for the planet.” The addition of tricalcium phosphate does two things: it adds calcium to the nutrition of the product and acts as an acidity regulator. This means that even though it isn’t marketed as one, this could be used in coffee like barista-style milks. Co-op’s surprisingly cheap barista oat milk Photo: Co-op Swedish brand Veg of Lund has launched the world’s only potato milk, called DUG. And it’s giving existing plant-based milks a real run for their money, being free from the 14 most common allergens . It’s also super sustainable, being twice as land-efficient as oats and using 56 times less water than almonds.

While the carbon impact of dairy milk results in about 2.2 kg of CO2 per litre, the impact of plant milk is only about 0.6-0.9 kg per litre. The production of dairy milk also requires far more land, using about 2.2 m2 per litre produced, while plant milks use between 0.3 m2 and 0.5 m2. Our article comparing the climate impact of plant and dairy milk has more information. But don’t worry, it’s not just mashed potatoes blended with water. DUG’s range has three milks: original, unsweetened and barista. The original, sweetened version is a 1.5% milk, while the other two are 3%. And even though potatoes (9%) and water are the two most prominent ingredients, there’s pea protein and rapeseed oil complementing the texture in each of the milks. While the cost-of-living crisis is forcing many people to make difficult choices, the top executives of larger companies are probably not worrying too much about having to tighten their belts.

I discovered I had an intolerance to dairy products 10 years ago and trust me when I say plant-based alternatives have changed a lot since then. To minimise the risk that the soya you are drinking is associated with deforestation, it is good to look for a company that sources it from outside South America. See the table below for what we found online on all the soya milk brands, including supermarkets. Wunda would look to “disrupt the market, stand out and offer something different to what’s already on the shelves”, he said. The launch will besupported by a major, multi-channel marketing campaign alongside investment in in-store activation and sampling.Brown in colour, this drink will remind you of chocolate milk when you drink it straight from the bottle. It's delicious. Like many, the brand swears its products are dairy-like. There are two blends in the lineup: The Common Blend and The Lush Blend. According to them, the book, which features more than 90 plant-based recipes will help ‘save the planet and nourish the soul’. Managing Director Nadine Maggi told The Grocer: “We recognize the need for versatility and variety, and we feel confident that our new range of plant-based drinks offers something for everyone’s usage needs.” Oatly had a brilliant range including barista, whole, skinny and organic milk, plus chocolate oat milk which I've had before and it tastes incredible.
