About this deal

The app will sync your list of saved Places with Whistle's servers, I assume to share with others who use your account. At least it will try —I got a warning numerous times that I had to plug the Whistle GO Explore in so this sync would happen. Before we finally get down to discussing the features, one crucial detail left to cover is the phone app. To put it frankly, this app is what’s responsible for making the Whistle GO Explore as easy to use and effective as it is. It recognizes when your dog does important things like playing, running around, or when he misses out on something important.

Apple's AirTag tells your other Apple devices exactly where to find your lost objects (or pets), even if they're miles away. To find the AirTag via your iPhone or iPad, you can instruct it to make a little piping sound or play a game of hot-and-cold with distance. If AirTags are more than 30 feet from your phone, they leverage Bluetooth connections with strangers' iPhones to tell you where they are. That said, Apple doesn't recommend using it for pets. Who It's For Battery life is one of the most important things regarding devices like this. Why’s that? The answer is very, very simple.

The Whistle Go Explore doesn't come with a separate base station; it has a built-in Wi-Fi radio and uses your home router to create its own base station. The third-generation Fi comes with a Bluetooth-enabled charging base and also supports Wi-Fi, with the ability to connect to up to six networks at a time. It also provides a detailed location history for the last 24 hours and settings for safe zones, battery options, and settings to tweak the device’s performance. Both the Fi Collar and the Whistle GO come with settings that allow you to avoid any unnecessary push notifications.

Still, we charged it every few days to ensure its battery life remained full in case something unfortunate happened. We advise that you do the same, just in case your dog gets lost or something else happens, as the device will be vital in recovering the little guy. What’s more, the application takes the responsibility of making things easier for you by converting everything into tables or charts you can easily understand. I'm one of those pet parents. My dog — a two-year-old lab-boxer-pit mix with a heart of gold named Stevie — is very important to me, and I'm pretty sure that I annoy her with how often I'm up in her business. I'm always trying to play, snuggle, give scratches, and marvel at her cuteness. (I've put a sweater on her once, and only once). That all may sound like paradise for a dog, but I swear she gives me side-eye when I get too clingy. Thanks to the app, the device provides detailed information in every aspect while being very easy to use. We didn’t have huge issues with it, but of course, everyone’s experiences are unique, and so are their opinions.

ESCAPE ALERTS: A notification gets sent straight to your phone when your dog leaves your custom-made area We disliked that the push notification for when your dog leaves a safe zone is rather delayed. The initial notification can take up to a minute to reach your phone, and dogs can get into a mighty fine mess in just a minute. If used in WiFi (like at home), the battery lasts a long time. When used otherwise, I have to charge it every night, but it is completely worth it for the piece of mind! During this period, you can use the device as much as you’d like and return it at the total price (depending on certain conditions) if you run into any problems or don’t like what it offers. Pros and Cons of FiIt's a chunky piece of hardware, but it's definitely durable. The key to good battery life with the GO Explore is to make sure you pair the device with the Wi-Fi found in your current location. The app supports multiple Safe Places, so you can list your home, office, wherever you frequent. Log in at the Wi-Fi in each location, register that network in the app with each location you record, and each spot becomes a safe zone. It should be noted that the GO Explore itself is usable by smaller dogs and even cats, though the health info is mainly for dogs. The most important thing for most owners is how fast you get notified of a pet escaping the premises. Unfortunately, this is one area where Whistle doesn't take top honors. In my tests, it usually took a full 4.5 minutes to get a notification (text and push) that the device had left the safe places zone, which as many pet owners know, is plenty of time for a determined doggo to ditch you. In comparison, the Fi Smart Collar took 3 minutes and 20 seconds for the initial notification.
