About this deal

MANUFACTURED USING PREMIUM STEEL - Our split wedge tool is made to last while resisting corrosion and rust. This tool is manufactured using drop-forged and heat-treated high-quality iron material. How well this log splitter works depends on how you’re using it, as well as what you’re using it on. Different hammers will give you different results. Something small, like the Faithfull FAIFG4 4lb Club Hammer, is all you need if you’re splitting small logs. However, if you’re working with medium or large logs, which this log splitter is capable of handling, then go with a bigger hammer. Keep in mind that, while this log splitter handled every diameter of log that I threw at it, it struggled with logs that were significantly taller than its own height (17.5cm). I also found its four-way claim to be false – in my experience, it splits wood into two instead. These two new tools came into the ‘armoury’this week and not before time because I always end up with 2 or 3 big logs that laugh at my normal axe (as it bounces off). But now I have two sure fire ways of splitting those difficult to break logs. Logs become difficult to split usually because there was a large branch joining the main trunk, which makes the grain real gnarly. No1: The Splitting Maul

The dimensions of 22.56 x 6.35 x 4.45 cm means that it is longer than your average log splitting wedge too.

What was most impressive was how easy it was to use this log splitter. Simply dropping the weight down the pole a few times is all you really need to do to split most logs. Larger logs, as well as knottier logs, may require you to push the weight down the pole a little more forcefully, but the amount of effort needed really is minimal. Universal – These wedges can be used for both felling and splitting. But the tradeoff for this versatility is that universal wedges aren’t as effective as specific types of wedges. With this, I was able to use the grenade log splitter on just about every size of log. It obviously performs much better on smaller logs, but it’s more than capable of splitting large logs with a bigger diameter too. So, does this log splitter really require minimal force? Compared to the other manual splitters for kindling that I tested, with the exception of the Swedish Log Splitter, I would say yes, this one is the easiest to use. You don’t need to be particularly strong to use this tool, and you don’t need to own a hammer either – just place your wood into the ring and hit it with anything slightly weighty that you have to hand, even if this is just another piece of wood. You may not need a splitting wedge with smaller logs or stumps, or with softwoods like pine and fir. But for any larger pieces of wood, knotty wood, and hardwood, it’s easier to use a splitting wedge. This saves you from having to employ mauls or other heavy equipment, which are effective but require more physical force.

Tool No. 2: the wood grenade or log splitter. This is a rough lump of steel shaped like a three dimensional wedge or a tall pyramid. The wedge literally forces the log apart and nothing will survive it. SUPER IMPORTANT: you MUST wear eye protection ( and also for any spectators within a ten foot radius) when using a ‘grenade’. You’ll see why when you use one. There is a tremendous amount of force in use here and it’s landing on top of a piece of steel. If a small piece breaks and ricochets off…… deadly. Minimal effort tends to be needed for hydraulic log splitters – like our top recommendation the Forest Master FM5. That said, there are some manual log splitters out there with designs that enable you to easily split logs, no matter your physical ability, without the use of a hammer. Once you’re done wood splitting, you can then cover the blade over with the metal safety cap that Forest Master has provided. This allows you to leave the tool screwed onto your base log even while it’s not in use, since you won’t need to worry about anyone accidentally falling on it and injuring themselves. And among each material itself is a range of hardness. For example, there are some types of steel that are harder than others, which will affect the wedge’s overall performance and longevity. It’s best suited for working with well-seasoned wood, and isn’t going to bust apart huge logs, but it’s a handy gadget that works well alongside a splitting maul or set of wedges. Keep in mind, expensive wedges aren’t necessarily the best ones. Price is tied to a variety of factors, not just quality. But compared to other woodworking equipment, such as the axes themselves or electric grinders, splitting wedges are cheap.Aluminum – Aluminum holds up better to extreme temperatures, but is lighter and therefore less effective. It’s also softer, which means that it may need to be replaced sooner than a steel variant.

The log splitter itself is a single-piece item that’s ready to be used straight out of the box. However, if you’re in the EU, the law requires you to assemble the safety cage, which takes a lot of time and patience. Have a look at some images online to work out how it’s done, since the instructions aren’t very helpful.

Because of this, it’s a worthwhile investment to get two instead of one. Buying two wedges has its own benefits:
