About this deal

Newly 2-year-old and quite petite in size (36″ tall), the AIRO was a great fit for our youngest tester in size 18-months pants. Although he has a heavier and slightly larger balance bike at home, he had been hesitant to ride (or even walk it) for months. Not giving up, his parents continued to encourage him to ride, but to no success. One extra the AIRO does offer, though, is a lifetime warranty on the frame and fork – definitely a big plus point if you're planning on more little cyclists, or you're considering passing the bike onto a family member or friend afterwards. Overall The wider set handlebars of the woom allow her to extend her arms significantly out past her shoulders as compared to the Strider. With wider set hands, minor movements on the wider handlebars won’t affect the overall steering and control of the bike as much as movements on a narrower bar. Narrower handle bars lead to more twitchy steering.

With an affordable price combined with great quality, not to mention super lightweight, we think the Vitus Nippy is the best balance bike to buy in 2023. Mumsnetters warn against spending lots on a balance bike as they're used for a relatively short time, and the Nippy hits the sweet spot between performance, quality and price. Specialized say the Hotwalk is designed for "less crashes and more smiles" to help kids get on two wheels with confidence. The bike has a low standover and 12" wheels, so it's a great size for a 3 or 4 year old to get their bearings. We've recently reviewed the brand new Hornit AIRO balance bike, and it was so lightweight I actually thought they'd forgotten to put it in the box! If you want to know more about our thoughts you can read our first impressions review of the Hornit AIRO balance bike here. Size: Cycling UK advises that your child should be able to sit comfortably on the balance bike, knees slightly bent and feet flat on the floor.Weighing in at just 2.95kg this is quite a feat of balance bike design. They've even managed to include a footplate for your child to rest their feet on as they gain confidence and start moving at speed - but you don't get brakes. Before recommending the best balance bikes for toddlers we spent time searching through our Mumsnet forums to find the balance bikes that come most highly recommended by the parents in our community. Expert guidance We had a strider and it was brilliant. Also amazing customer service when we needed some help.” (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user SpanielPlusToddler) Our verdict When the AIRO arrived the first surprise was the weight of the box. It was so light, I did wonder if they’d remembered to put the bike inside! Thankfully they had and opening it up revealed the Orca White version of the Hornit AIRO.

Brake: A handbrake is an optional choice on a balance bike as a child will instinctively use their feet to stop, at least at first. However, many balance bikes do offer rear brakes, which could be helpful as kids develop into speedy riders much later on. This could also go a long way to aiding their confidence and also protecting their shoes. The Hornit AIRO’s handlebar is one of the most narrow on the market. At 14.25″ wide (not including the wide grip bumpers that cannot be used to actually grip), they about 1.5″ more narrow than the Yeedoo TooToo and 1.75″ more narrow than the woom 1. Hornit are so confident in the quality of this balance bike they're giving it a lifetime warranty which can be registered on-line for free. We found the strider sport was great for a very short nearly 2 year old, as it was the only one that had a saddle that could go low enough and light enough. However, they’ve got their shortcomings. When we caught up with Isla Rowntree, founder of Islabikes, she summed it up pretty nicely: “[Training wheels] are not actually a great way to learn to ride. A bicycle steers by leaning, you lean it to the right and the handlebars fall to the right, you lean it to the left and they fall to the left. We found the AIRO to be an amazing little bike for kids for young riders in 18 months to 3T pants. With a minimum seat height of 11.25″, the AIRO is one of the few balance bikes on the market that easily accommodates younger testers in 18-months pants. When you take delivery of your AIRO getting it ready to ride is a doddle. Arriving almost fully assembled, all you need to do is tighten three bolts, adjust the seat height (if necessary) and make sure the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. That’s it.

But would the AIRO win the yellow jersey in a race to the top, or crash out in the first stage? Our First Look reviewer, a mum of three, got to find out. Who's it for? The frame design of the Hornit AIRO allows a lot of variation in the height of the seat post, meaning it is suitable for children with an inside leg between 30cm and 54cm.

Woom 1 Balance Bike - (£229)

The AIRO features footrests which have been stylishly contoured into the frame and the air-filled rubber tires on aluminium rims make for a smooth free-wheeling experience. The neoprene padded stem provides additional safety, while the fully adjustable seat makes it perfect for ages 18 months to 5 years (with a recommended inside leg of 11.8" to 18.1" / 30-46cm ). Consider how often your child is likely to use it, how long you'd want it to last and if it could be resold later or passed down to a younger sibling. As my balance biker is getting older and bolder I would love for her to have something more than just her feet to stop her, especially since this bike gets moving. I would also love the ability to have her practice the handbrake before she gets to a pedal bike and using feet to stop are not an option. For the price point, I think this should be a feature. No steering limiter

The frame also grows so you can have the bike in a small frame mode and then when your child has outgrown it you can adjust the frame to make it bigger. Yes, it's a bigger cost upfront, but if you buy when your child is at the balance bike stage you get three bikes in one, plus there are no hassles of shopping for new bikes for quite a few years! Highly recommend Frog bikes. Nice and light which is what they need. We’ve had quite a few now as the children have grown. My son had a fantastic lightweight plastic balance bike first of all but I can’t remember the brand. Then we discovered Frog bikes and have had those ever since." (Tried and tested by Mumsnet user Jerble) Our verdict In all cases, the best balance bikes featured are lightweight and very easy for young children to manoeuvre. They are well constructed to last the abuse that their riders will inflict, and come recommended by many different parents. In addition, sealed bearings mean that the wheels are better protected against road debris and the elements. Zero-maintenance and available with a lifetime warranty, the AIRO will be the first step into the world of cycling for your budding mini champ! At its lowest point, the saddle should measure one inch lower than your child’s inseam measurement. When sat on the saddle, your child should be able to put both feet flat on the ground, with a slight bend at the knee. The additional weight is worth considering if you're intending to carry it on a regular basis (say home from nursery or pre-school), but our reviewer found the Pinto to be very easy and fun to ride in balance bike mode. Weighing it at 2.95kg the AIRO combines a really lightweight bike frame with pneumatic tyres, which means that your Sprog should enjoy a much more comfortable ride than on a cheaper bike with solid tyres. They can be used from as young as 18 months and teach toddlers how to balance and move on a bike without the added complication of using the pedals. They’ll also build their confidence and learn bike control which will make the transition to a full pedal bike almost seamless when they’re older. What to consider when buying a balance bike Lighter on the wallet than any comparable balance bike, the AIRO is superior on every meaningful measure.
