About this deal

My first piece of advice for anyone considering painting their uPVC door is to choose your paint wisely. I sadly did not choose the best paint, so I want you to benefit from my mistakes! I recommend Frenchic Al Fresco Paint which you can find here. Below you’ll find the one I used for this door that was a total pain, but did work well! The Paint I Don’t Recommend To Paint Your Front Door A 750ml tin will provide a single coat of up to 12.5m 2. For a durable finish, a minimum of 2 coats is required, so your 750ml tin should provide full coverage for just over 6m 2 on non-porous surfaces like laminate or metal. Limited Edition 500ml tins will provide a single coat of up to 8. 5m 2 . Ensure surfaces are in suitable condition for painting and clean, dry, free from wax, grease of penetrating substances and in sound condition. If previously painted, remove loose or flaking paint. Fill any holes/imperfections with a suitable filler.

Now it’s time to get painting! You might like to watch our video guide to painting UPVC doors as the painting process is the same. A 750ml tin will provide a single coat of up to 12.5m2. Rust will need treatment, whilst any algae, mould or moss should be removed. These can generally be removed with outdoor cleaning solutions. Most importantly, always wear protective gear, including a mask and rubber gloves, when cleaning mould. What do I need to paint a wooden door? Large, flat surfaces can be a challenge to paint evenly. Whether you are using brushes, a roller or a sprayer, it’s good idea to have practised your technique beforehand to ensure that you’re confident when working on your front door. I did consider naming this blog post ‘How NOT To Paint a uPVC Front Door’ as my social media community will know how much of a nightmare it was. FrontDoorGate has been rumbling along for many months, and much blood, sweat and tears have been shed along the way. OK no blood, but tonnes of sweat and tears! But if you want to go for it, I have lots of tips to make painting uPVC easier. And I do think its worth all the trouble! What Paint Should You Use For a uPVC Front Door? Curing (hardening) time is up to 3 weeks in normal conditions. Treat gently until curing is completeA 500ml tin will provide a coat of up to 7m 2. For a durable finish, a minimum of 2 coats is required, so your 500ml tin should provide full coverage for 3.5m 2 on non-porous surfaces like laminate or metal. Porous, or ‘thirsty’ surfaces like bare wood or MDF, tend to absorb paint meaning additional coats are likely to be required to achieve a durable finish. In this case, your 750ml tin will provide less than 6m2 of full coverage. If you apply the paint too thinly, durability may be affected. Recommended surface preparation in addition to the above – clean with Frenchic Sugar Soap, rinse, dry, hand-sand sufficiently to abrade the surface and/or to smooth any protrusions after filling. Wipe off any dust, paint away!

Give the door and sides a good scrub with the sugar soap solution and a sponge/cloth to remove any traces of dirt and grease. Rinse off thoroughly, then allow to dry (remember, wood can take quite a while to dry, especially if the weather is damp or cool). Painting our front door didn’t take that long, it’s the prep that takes ages. And waiting for the paint to dry before recoating. This is the most laborious, time-consuming part of painting a front door, but do not be tempted to skip it! When your door is dry, very carefully peel off the masking tape around the windows (use a craft knife to cut it at the edges if it seems to be pulling the paint away). Curing is a progressive process, which can take up to three weeks for the paint to fully harden. Treat the painted surface with care during this time.
