Taking cuttings from healthy, mature stems is an excellent way to propagate plants. To maximize the success of your cuttings, it is important to choose the right stems to propagate from. Pot up the cuttings individually when you see roots poking out the bottom of the pot. When they’re well-rooted, ease them out and grown on in re-used pots. Lavender: Choose non-flowering stems that are semi-hardwood and 4-6 inches long. Strip off the lower leaves and treat the cut end with a rooting hormone before planting. Hold the pruning scissors at a 45-degree angle. One popular method is to dip the cutting in a rooting hormone. This will encourage the root growth. Dip the cutting in the hormone and then place it in potting soil or another rooting medium.
