However, I just never could really connect to the characters very much nor cared much for how certain parts of the book were structured. All of this is happening just after WWI and during the Coolidge presidency but the time span of the book goes into the early 1950's which is also when the book was published, 1952. Elizabeth Taylor, who ultimately received the highly desirable role, was also under to M-G-M, which loaned her out to Warner Bros. And despite Edna Ferber's descriptions of these characters, I could only see the actor's images as I read Giant. She protests being expected to suppress her beliefs in deference to Bick's; this conflict leads to their temporary separation.

Jett is of the new rich, a wildcatting oil baron whose story is strangely tied in with the of the Benedicts. In this part of the story an interesting statement is made that I paraphrase as a man can choose to remain set in his ways but he can't choose to stop progress as progress is unstoppable and inevitable. Slowly the mystery of Texas penetrates Leslie’s mind, as she watches her children grow and the ranch shrink, threatened by the new get-rich-quick catalyst, oil.
